New map: Empire of Stars

Hello I'm making a new map Big smile

It will audaciously be called "Empire of Stars". The admittedly rather whacky idea is that the ancient Empire of Stars was actually an interstellar empire. The hero discovers an ancient interstellar hub that brings them to other planets.

The existing hub has 8 platforms so there will be 8 stars. The main quests are finding your aunt (who discovered the hub before you) and then finding a way back home again. To be able to teleport to a certain planet you need its "starstone".

I made a first demo release of the introduction island and the hub. You will find the aunt right in the hub. The island has a few enemies that let you reach level one. Among them are unique black snappers & crabs on the beaches.

Project GitHub: https://github.com/foerstj/empire-of-stars
Demo Release: https://github.com/foerstj/empire-of-stars/releases/tag/v0.1

Try it out and let me know what you think! Big smile

Some teasers, and proof it was working for me at least...

Reached the village of Eddiloo

Into the woods

Moon landing

Why no gloves, my hands get cold vendors should sell gloves.

The mayor does sell gloves, but the pcontent is very limited, maybe you had bad luck. Hope you find some on the way Smile
She's copied from my Pentachoron Garden map. The "starter shop" is supposed to give you only what you need to get started. And even then, in the beginning you won't have enough money to buy all she offers - especially if you want to add the silly girl Laura to your party. Hard choices are interesting choices Wink

So Laura and I went back home and took a short trip to the moon. She said she was hungry and the loggerman can not cook. The dwarves are just a bit meek and like snow ball fights. The Gremal Stew was passable however I will have to mull over the mead before I decide if it is drinkable. Laura liked the mead she drank a good deal of it and now has her head in a bucket, I am not sure why.

Nice, I've just downloaded it.

Dancing naked with the Moon Dwarves! Well I guess magic things happen in a magic tavern... And as they say, what happens on the moon stays on the moon! Good thing you took the silly girl with you, she'd have died of boredom in Eddiloo!
And good thing Betelgeuse will be a hippie planet, your girls will find a more appropriate outlet for this kind of party mood there Smile Not sure what the Dwarves were thinking. The Utraeans on Betelgeuse certainly won't mind.
Speaking of which: is there any chance I could make bare-chested Utraeans, both sexes?

I know I could do that easily using the cat mansion characters. Therefore it should be possible to do the same with regular farm girl and farm boy. The only thing that might be a problem is getting the skin color correct. I will try, you might also wish to ask kathycf as she might be able to convert one of her armor textures into a character skin.
Elf

easy with cat mansion characters

That looks great already, of course the map won't have anime models by default.

I'll just tell you my "maximum fantasy" and you can tell me what's possible and send me resources if they already exist. It's supposed to be kind of a utopian society.
- White clothes, some scanty, some long flowing skirts
- Bare upper bodies both sexes, with possibility to switch bare female breasts on/off by adding/removing a .dsres
- I think someone here is doing things like custom hair styles, tiaras, ribbons, that would be really cool as well
- Skin color should be Utraean of course, tribal tattoos would be a bonus
- I'd like to have a man and a woman hireable. No need for custom hairdo or attire, but they shouldn't be equipped with a "bare" armor that I then could take off to reveal the usual clothes underneath, that'd be weird
- About full nudity, I know it's difficult with the men; maybe I could have a bathing scene at a pond where the men just all happen to be in the water and some girls happen to stand on the shore, dunno
Lemme know your thoughts! Smile

I know you can convert ds1 to ds2 (I.E. legendary mod) but could the ds2 playable Utreans be converted to ds1 for this

Dwarf

full body tat work

I love the first one, it's dope!
Or... are they both the same? They look very different this blurred & sharp

But... are these socks-in-sandals a mockery of the German sense of fashion? Big smile

Images are of the same girl one from a long distance (so some fog) and one from close up.

The socks in Sandals I always believed was a Japanese thing and not a German Thing. However in this case its a game thing. If there where no socks you would end up with a different foot color, than the overall character skin color. This is an original Cat Mansion item designed by Hamcat from "Cat Mansion Girls" made in 2003 a year after DS1 was released in April 2002. Ack I been playing this game for almost 20 years!

What irritated me on the 2nd picture is the blurry edges of the tattoos - they have gradients instead of sharp edges.

Still, can you send me the files so I can try this out on my end?

I created the tattoos years ago and no longer have the original drawings. I am sure they are on a crashed hard drive. I do not even remember how I made them, parts of my mind have crashed as well. Sorry foerstj
Elf

Could you provide hireable characters with a spell book and a back pack? The back packs are in dsx_bpk_backpack.gas this can be found in DSLOA\expansion.dsres\world\contentdb\templates\regular\interactive\
Please pretty please Smile
Elf

Not sure about that, I'll see what I can do.

First, I don't want to equip them with things that don't make sense. Aunt Luna for example is a magical character thru&thru, so of course I gave her a spellbook. Didn't find out yet how to equip a non-empty spellbook, else she'd already be wearing it.
Laura on the other hand is empty, because she's surprised by your arrival and didn't have time to pack. I could put some things in a chest in her house tho. Also she's not a magical character - she's as normal as anything in Eddiloo and that's why she wants to leave it with you. You're welcome to buy her a spellbook tho and make her a sorceress, spell books aren't expensive.

About the backpacks I have a little problem: SE crashes as soon as I try to put them on the ground or equip a character with one. Luna should have one, and Laura might have one in her house, and I wanted to make the player's initial luggage a backpack instead of a chest, but I can't get it working somehow.
There must be a way tho, since my SE can load the LoA regions. Maybe I can figure out how to make shopkeeps sell them, or how the one in Arhok works - seems to be instantiated as a quest reward somehow, not sure how that would fit into the story but I'll think of sth...

I did some digging and it seems all the vendors who sell pacpacks are magic vendors and the back packs are in the MISC section of their inventory

Take a look at Merik's template.

[t:template,n:merik]

		[inventory]
	{
		custom_head = m_c_gah_fb_hlmt_merik;
		selected_active_location = il_active_primary_spell;
		[other]
		{
			il_active_primary_spell = spell_iceshard;
			il_main = spell_firespray;
			il_main = spell_healing_hands;
			il_main = spell_hold_creature;
			il_main = spell_spark;
			il_main = spell_dancing_zap;
			il_main = spell_resurrect;
			il_main = spell_mana_channel;
			il_main = spell_healing_wind;

So you can put whatever spell you want in Auntie's spellbook and whatever spells you think appropriate in her general inventory.
If you want random spells based on her level, look at Andiemus:

	screen_name = "Andiemus";
	}
	[inventory]
	{
		selected_active_location = il_active_primary_spell;
		[equipment]
		{
			es_chest = #body,m/120-130;
			es_feet = #boots/20-25;
		}
		[other]
		{
			il_active_primary_spell = #nmagic/22-24;
			il_main = #nmagic/8-16;
			il_main = #nmagic/15-19;
			il_main = #nmagic/20-22;
			il_main = #nmagic/20-22;
			il_main = #nmagic/22-24;
            il_main = #staff/45-58;
            il_main = book_glb_lore_castle;

Regarding clothing and tattoo stuff, here are some of my thoughts. Smile

Clothing is easily done, except long skirts. The robe model would have to do. Nudity, tattoos and scanty clothing can be handled with alpha channels. The a1 male and female models that use alpha channels are from LoA_CutieGirl_Revived_v2 (Contains (optional) Nudity)

Example of some alpha channel armor I did using the models from Cutie Girl revived:

Switching nudity by adding/subtracting via separate .dsres would likely crash the game.

Full nudity for male characters is indeed tricky due to certain 3D male body parts. Some kind of an illusion deal could possibly be drawn in as there are many paintings and drawings of male nudes. Or the men could wear some kind of thong underwear.

I think someone here is doing things like custom hair styles, tiaras, ribbons, that would be really cool as well

assuming the template names are correct that is

Thanks for pointing me to the Merik & Andiemus templates. I'll try to do it on the object instead of the template because IMHO that's where it belongs, but if it doesn't work I can put it in the template.

I'll also experiment with the backpacks a bit more. Maybe it works if I put it in the templates instead of objects. There are sometimes subtle differences in that. For example when I animated the galaxy in the middle of the hub, I had to do that in the template because putting it right in the object didn't work.

And yay @kathycf hello! Let's PM about those alpha channel models and ribbon wig things...

I've had some success with the spellbooks & backpacks. Had to do a lot more in templates than I wanted to, but it works.

Meanwhile I've opened the texture files & made me a new Utraean:

(Right-click -> "show picture" to see full size.)

I kind of suck at this. Maybe it isn't half as bad when seen in-game from the usual angles.
Will have to re-do the bands around hands & feet because they look like metal right now.
Also maybe I shouldn't have chosen the most ill-tempered looking face to start with lol.
So, making the dresses white seems to be doable, but I doubt I'd be able to draw more skin, to undress the arms for example...
Do you have "bare Utraean" textures for me?

Wow nice job Foerstj like the utraean dude. You are correct about his hands and feet. Also cool you got the backpacks to work.

Hmm. The thing is, Andiemus already has a spellbook w/ an active spell equipped, without directly adding in a spellbook in the template. Zed's template is done the same way:
	screen_name = "Zed";
	}
	[inventory]
	{
		selected_active_location = il_active_primary_spell; \\ Equips character w/ spellbook?
		[equipment]
		{
			es_chest = bd_ro_m_d_c_003;
			es_feet = #boots/-no_mod/4-8;
		}
		[other]
		{
			il_active_primary_spell = spell_zap;
			il_main = spell_healing_hands;
			il_main = spell_resurrect;
                        il_main = #staff/-no_mod/7-10;

Perhaps the line - selected_active_location = il_active_primary_spell; - before the equipment block indicates that the character should have a spellbook equipped? I didn't change anything about his inventory and did not rearrange any items.

I think every character should have a spellbook, either equipped or in their inventory. It's far too annoying to wander around looking for one.

Weekend Update, still didn't actually start on the next EoS release, but I was busy making models for Betelgeuse.
I hate the work, it takes an awful lot of time.

Here are some cats. Took me a day to make them meow. Models & animations are more awkward than can be seen here. Taken from Project Britannia:

Utraean male in white clothes, 4 tattoo color variants:

Utraean female in white clothes, 4 tattoo color variants:

And here is some experimental nudity and semi-nudity. Right-click to view full size at your own discretion:

If you ask me, what's inappropriate in this picture is the guy holding a knife Wink
Nude texture taken from Girl_Armor_5. Skin tone turned bluish-gray, and slightly adapted at borders of neck & elbows. Tattoos & trousers copied from the female model above.
As mentioned I might include full nudity in a bathing scene at some pond or the like. Will have to remove the white socks, that looks silly.

Update: I also made some new color variants for the iconic gremal:

Anyways, this was an interesting weekend foray, but it annoys me how much time it all takes. Should start working on 0.3 next weekend and just use normal Utraeans at first.

...I like the dark SithGremal most! Evil Wink
