EMI, Apple Add Non-DRM Option to Music Catalog

Very interesting. I don't like the concept of DRM much since it prevents me from enjoying my music on whatever platform I choose. So this is a nice move by Apple and EMI indeed.

Solution No. 840;

1. Buy your normal DRM infested music

2. Get Tunebite

3. Run your music through Tunebite, producing a seperate DRM-free copy, as long as it can play on your computer (this means you need the original licence on your computer from buying it)

4. Enjoy the cleaned up music. Smile

If you are buying regular cd's you dont need to worry about drm and such as long as you dont have autoplay enabled. You can just rip the files off as mp3's and then you have unencumbered music files. Of course if you only want 1 or 2 songs on a album you are way overpaying for the cd but most things I have bought the last couple years (which is only about 5 cd's) dont have any "singles" to begin with as most things I listen to are not the top 40 type music and they dont really have singles for them.

Well, I still listen to radio for the majority of my music consumption... but if DRM dies completely then I might consider buying some of my favorite songs which I don't already have. Most of my music is on CD, and I have no real need to convert it into MP3 format (not owning an MP3 player yet...). When I find a reasonably priced MP3 player that has an AM/FM radio too I might just have to buy it. Until then, CD's and radio are good enough for me... Wink

BTW, here's a new article which talks about "DRM: Pointless and Stupid!" Smile

I do not own a mp3 player either, but it makes it much easier to listen to whatever I want to on my computer. I have good speakers with my computer and I use it like a jukebox when I am doing stuff on the computer, pretty much for anything including when playing games. I have about 125gb of music files, though I could probably get rid of a good 50gb that I never listen to and probably wont ever listen to, and then I can set up very large diverse playlists. I sometimes run things in order but many times set a big list to random.
