SPAM threads

Hi folks;

I am taking the liberty of doing this so I hope other site staff don't feel I am stepping on their toes. From time to time, we have spambots either slipping through with registration and posting content, or posting link spam as guest users. In any case, please don't respond to these threads or any spam type comments you may find. Solly and other site staff members check in pretty frequently and remove this junk. It just helps if nobody posts any replies.

I am repeating this part again....This includes comments, but also includes threads that are started by spammers.

If an anonymous person posts a comment, it is pretty easy to get rid of. However, a member's comment can't simply be snipped without it affecting all the offshoots of that comment and makes things a bit trickier. (at least for me). So do me a favor and DON'T respond to anything spammy. (and yes, links to other sites such as people searches, the obvious porn ones or whatever ARE most assuredly SPAM).

Thanks everybody! Laughing out loud Smile

Kathy

*edit* Additionally, never click on any suspicious or spam type link. That just encourages more link spam being posted. Plus, I accidently did it and *ewww*.

/me looks at his toes... sees they are in good health (not having been stepped on). Smile

Well said Kathy.

Hmm...I haven't noticed any spam bots for a while. Guess that means you guys are doing your jobs. Smile

Well, it helps that comments from anoymous users have to be approved before members see them. But sometimes things slip by or whatever.
But thanks. Smile

Yes, this forum software does indeed make the job a lot easier. I've deleted somewhere between 50-100 spam posts since StheD was moved to this platform and less than 10% were ever viewable by non-staff. In this setup Guest posting is allowed without risking spammy forums, and the only "cost" is that legit guest comments aren't visible until they are approved by staff. Smile

Please note: If a MEMBER here posts SPAM, please ignore that as well. This is for the same reasons as in my original post. It if fun to make fun of spammers (I like it too) but really, the best thing to do is SIMPLY IGNORE it and it will be dealt with. Rest assured that the SPAM will be sliced, diced and served between two slices of bread. In otherwords (if you will forgive my heavy attmepts at humor) site staff will deal with SPAM from members, guests and any other assorted entities.

Those who abuse this site with their SPAM trash will NOT get away with it. Thanks again!

I'm still new to forum etiquette, but I'm learning (sometimes slowly). Seems there are a bunch of do's and don'ts. At least I didn't "reply" to the post but rather added a new comment to the main thread. I'll learn it all eventually though, I promise. Smile

Not a problem, Volkan, no worries.

I am still learning about Drupal which is the platform this site runs on. Yes, you are correct it is better to add reply by clicking on the original post. But if you click just above the last comment and add new comment that way, and then the site considers the two comments to be linked somehow...like as if the preceding comment was the parent and the ones that build off it are the children. That is why it is complicated so it makes it simpler to not comment to spam, period. Plus commenting to spam draws attention to it, which is the very thing the spammer wants...

Additionally, if a moderator edits a spam post, then the ones commenting on it cease to make sense, and soon things start to look incoherent.

I had heard of these mythological creatures called spam-bots before, but had never seen one. I am no longer a virgin. LOL

Even though I added a comment to the main post, I'm being tracked! I have to log in twice and log out twice. Noticed my browser said "tracker" after site name. Any suggestions?

Edit: Lavasoft can't get rid of it. Is that "hug" still available Kathy? Sad

You could clear out all your cookies, but then you would of course have to redo all logins and settings for every site you had a cookie for.

Instead of logging in twice I just hit my "bookmarks" again and when site reloaded I was showing as "logged in". Did it once and problem disappeared.

Nice, quick grab on that last one Kathy. Looks like they latch on the keyword "Pipple" (not using it again) to slip in the back door.
