I must tell my dad and sister about this, so they will stop complaining about my housekeeping. Just the other day I found a letter (unopened) from 2015. Now I don;t feel quite so bad!

I have lots of books you can sneeze at...

Kathy I have lots of dusty books that you are welcome to sneeze at. I have been accused of being male by several of my female friends as I am a super bad house keeper. Cheer Dance

Gargantuan Pants of Gruel

Fran├žois Rabelais was the author of Gargantua and Pantagruel, which consists of 4 books and is intended primarily as satire but seems to have plenty of goofy elements to it as well. He did write other things as well, but the "Gargantua" books are his most well known. I know I've heard of Rabelais in passing, but I don't think I read any of his work. But I downloaded a copy of the first pants-O-gruel from Project Gutenburg. So, yay, I guess.

The reason Rabelais stuck in my mind for a few days is because last week I happened to be looking up stuff about Gustave Dore, a French artist who illustrated a later edition of the "Gargantua" books.

Dore was a pretty prolific artist and as a kid, I had an old copy of Perrault fairy tales that he illustrated and I wanted to learn more about him. I, the Queen of Clutter unearthed this book fairly recently and only sneezed a dozen times while dusting it off.

Here is one picture from Gargantua.

And another here

There are more Dore illustrations here .

So I guess I did not realize just how prolific Dore was. According to Doreillustrations.com

Quote:

Damnnn, think of all the dusty books I could dust during that life span!

A quick Google image search makes me think it's not really an Asian Rebel or so - although it reads almost like this (to me)... Big smile

Edit: ...does this term rather come from Rabelais perhaps?

Yes it does KillerGremal, it is a reference to lude, rude and somewhat nasty behavior.

Mmm, candy...

Did you go trick or treating, little elf? Or perhaps attend a Halloween party, hmmm? Smile
You gotta try not to explode at home though, that just results in a messy cleanup.

BTW, it looks like *all* those pumpkins are sick from too much candy, except for the little guy in the front left. The pumpkin in the middle in the top row just has that face, like, "kill me now", probably due to sitting next to the pumpkins sitting on either side. That little one is all smug and getting its fill of Schadenfreude, the sweetest candy of all...

PS I knew what schadenfreude meant, but spelling it...not so much.

Okay, fine! Take pleasure in my spelling fail! Crazy Shock
