XP Split in Multiplayer Question

I tried asking this in garage.gaspowered forums, but got no response at all.

So, I am curious. How does XP Split work in Multiplayer if I were to outlevel my friend's char by a lot (10+ levels let's say). Would I be ruining his XP as we play through content for his level?

Just curious if I should level up an Alt to play with my friend's char because the one I made with him I am enjoying too much and want to play without my friend.

Hmm. First of all, welcome, Ziggarius.

Well, it will be some consolation to your friend if you give him a chance to level up to your current level, or to use a character that is closer to his level. Gives a meaning to GeT oN mYLeVel. If you are a higher level, your friend will not only have less fun, but will get less kills than you. Most of the loot dropped when the levels are uneven will most likely benefit you the most. To make it more enjoyable for you both, get on his level. Hoped this answered it. I'm a DS1 modder, not DS2. So, I'm not familiar with an "XP Split". Maybe someone else who answers will. Good luck.

Hmm, so, higher level loot drops from the same level enemy if a player is higher level?

Not really too worried about my friend getting kills, he's playing a Combat Mage, and I have a melee/nature Hybrid Tank.

But, if my being higher level is going to make higher level items drop, then I would think it safe to assume it'll mess with the xp. Thanks for the response, may not have been the response I would have liked but any response is better than none. Smile

I think it's more important to consider the monster level of the enemies you're battling, (compared to your characters' Character Level). There is a severe XP penalty for being too many levels above or below the beasties (within five levels is OK... beyond that you get very little XP). Play in regions of your partner's XP range, and he'll benefit more... play in regions of your level, and you'll get the better XP benefits.

This is the way it works in single player parties anyways... not sure if it's coded differently for MP co-op play, but since this is pretty core XP logic it should be the same (or very similar).

Forgot to mention that. As for the MP Code, I wouldn't think it to be different, as it is intended to operate the same way as SP; wouldn't make sense for monsters over five levels lower to give more XP.

Ah, alright. So, there isn't really a penalty for the party to have different levels. It's just the monsters you're fighting determines whos getting good xp or not.

Thanks much for the mechanics answer. Smile
