Do you like shoes? I like shoes. OMG-shoes!

Shoessssss.

I put together a mod using the shoe mesh from Project Britania's Ultima conversion. I used some custom textures to make a mini mod and was wondering if anyone might like to try it out. This mod is compatible with both DS1 and DS LoA.

For easier testing, I edited in the shoes to the heroes.gas so they are all right there when a character is first created. If you want to try the mod, keep in mind that this particular testing version will clash with mods that alter heroes. Later versions will not have any changes to heroes.gas This mod was tested with both DS Revived and DS Revived for LoA, with no issues...at least on my end. Smile

From the read-me:
This mod adds a new type of footwear, shoes. Wanting to have shoes in the game was a long time desire of mine. Some types of armor just doesn't look right to me with boots on. So, thanks to the folks at Team Archon for creating the meshes for shoes and all the other creative work they have done!
http://www.projectbritannia.com/

The meshes are made *only* for the default farmgirl/farmboy model and will not function properly with any map or mod that changes the default "farmperson" meshes. I couldn't make the equip requirements work to exclude the other races, so there are no equip requirements in this test mod.

Nothing very drastic happens if some character other than the default "humans" use the shoes. It just looks weird. There are more details about this in the read-me file.

Some screenshots:

The shoes give the armor a sleeker appearance,IMO.

Weird stuff trying to make the correct equipment requirements. Despite the kind help from PhoeniX, ghastely and Darkelf, I just couldn't make it work. I think it will be okay though. I won't have to make any changes to the formula or heroes.gas and that should make the mod pretty compatible with most other mods. My main concern was that something would happen to someone's game if a character of the wrong race equips the shoes, like their head would explode or their computer would catch on fire. But, this doesn't appear to be that big of a deal, more of an appearance issue than anything else.

Some really pretty shoes right here (not). Shock

Catmansion boy does okay with the shoes, surprisingly. I mean, yeah, they look strange, but you can still see the texture instead of ugly error stripes. Even if he looks like he has invisible feet. :P

In fact, all the characters that could put the shoes on, even though it was the wrong mesh, got the full benefit of the armor rating and any modifiers that were on the item. There are some more details on this in the read-me as well.

I'll be working on this mod some more, but with the holidays and stuff I'm not sure when. I DO have a fair amount of shoes waiting though... Laughing out loud

Great idea Kathy, I will download the mod and give it a look. Have a great holiday season. I am looking forward to December 31 so I can see Alabama win another foot ball game, thus the need for new shoes.

The engine removes the feet when it puts on the shoes, so if they don't cover the entire foot, you'll need skin where the gap is. Which means either a fixed piece of texture (representing socks?) or a bit of the same flesh colour as the wearer, meaning you'd need all the race variants.

I don't recall if it even supports the latter, as shoes weren't expected to expose skin in the base game. I'd just add socks at first, and look into matching skin later. A totally naked character gets the foot texture from the head in DS1, and the body in DS2, but there's no mechanism for combining that with an armour mesh's texture, except where the armour provides a default foot covering that differs from the naked foot.

Somewhere here there's an explanation of when you get red stripes, orange stripes and yellow stripes. Something is missing in each case, and sometimes it has to be fixed by an NNK update.

Edit: Found it in one of my own posts. Red stripes mean the texture was found, but is invalid e.g. size not a multiple of 64 (or whatever the rules say) or wrong file type, Orange is the simple "not found" situation and yellow is when it's not specified at all - such as an NNK error. That's also why a missing mesh gets a yellow striped placeholder.

Ur, lili, I know nothing of football, American or otherwise. Do you mean the Alabama Crimson Tide? Well, I hope you aren't too busy herding cats on that day. Wink

Ghastely, I'm not sure what I would do about adding socks. The mod uses the standard boot texture (DS1) so would I have to add socks in by editing the meshes? Puzzled If that's the case, it is beyond the scope of what I can accomplish. If I add socks to the basic boot texture, it's still only going to use the bottom bit of the texture.

If I can easily edit socks, I'm going with these Tongue

*EDIT* I just saw the addition to your post-

Well, now I'm totally confused. I used the regular sized boot texture and received the red "error" texture on characters for whom the mesh wasn't designed. The default human people look fine, no errors. See, I don't know anything about modeling, so I don't know if the shoe mesh can be adapted to fit the other characters. It looks like a shoe on the skeleton, dwarf and half-giant, it just doesn't like the texture. I r confused.

Hi Kathy,

If you look at the shoes for the Cat Mansion Characters you will find that they all use a boot mesh. So what you would need to do is make a shoe and sock (all one texture) using the boot mesh. You can see this by looking at any of the original Cat Mansion Footwear. Here is a screen shot. Note the socks, also the dress she has on adds Leggings. If she where wearing say a type 1 or type 3 armor the white part of the sock would go farther up the leg.

I checked your images and they are all 128 x 128 therefore a multiple of 64 therefore the red/black images are not being caused by that, in any case they if that where true it would show red/black on all characters. Also I believe that the half giant and dwarf in DS1 both use the same mesh as the standard farmboy. I may be wrong but do not think so.

Elf

That was just an example of an error that gets you red stripes - i.e. one I've had. There can be other reasons, and it may well be that the "wrong spec" problem is that it's pointed at a texture for the wrong race (so a copy with the right name would work). Or something else, but still of the "I found it, but I don't like it" variety.

On Cat Mansion Girls the shoes do not display, she just gets bare feet. On Cat Mansions Boys as you are aware the shoes display but the feet are missing. On the standard farm girl and farm boy the new shoes work fine. It should be noted that the Cat Mansion characters use a different mesh than the standard characters and there are major differences between the Cat Mansion Boy and Girl Meshes also. As far as I can see there is nothing wrong with the templates, but I only did a brief scan of them. I compared them with my mod "n00b Armor" which works on all types of characters, and adds new boots, but not shoes. Now I do remember having issues with some of the armor (like shoes and gloves) when using Cat Mansion characters and playing Project Britania so that may be your problem with the Cat Mansion Characters. Also if I recall correctly there are no half giants, Skeletons, or dwarfs in Project Britania so you may wish to look there.

Elf

I noticed that some of the image files have all white alpha channels and some do not have alpha channels. It does not make a difference with the Cat Mansion Characters, just thought I would point that out.

I also noted that when equipping the shoes on a Cat Mansion Character the item moves from inventory slot to equipped slot and once equipped jumps back to the inventory slot, still showing as equipped. When you un-equip the shoes (moving them to inventory) they disappear from the equipped slot, and you can not equip new shoes until you close the inventory and re-open it.

Some shoes from adepts that work

Just a thought since you adapted (no pun intended) the shoes from Project Britannia there may be another part of that mod required to make the shoes display properly. Since the image is a full boot but the item on the foot is a shoe.

The Elf shoots at things in the dark.

Well, I appreciate you guys taking the time to comment and Lili, for testing. Smile

Project Britannia only had meshes for the default human "farmfolks", and I think that those are the main player characters. I believe I may have been misleading with my screenshots. I was just showing what happens when a character for whom the mesh has *not* been made equips it and not really aiming to get the mod compatible with everybody. I just thought it was cool that other player characters could even equip the shoe, even if it was only with ugly red error stripes. BTW, I've gotten yellow error stripes when I made a mistake with a model, but also when I've used the wrong texture (that horrible bumblebee armor! Shock ). I can't recall getting the red stripes for any errors before. *shrug*

My main concern was with not getting the equip requirements right. I thought that if say, a dwarf put the shoes on, then the game would get that dreaded "exception detected" message and crash. I would really really hate to have that happen to someone, and luckily it doesn't seem to be the case.

I can't model for squat, so using the armor meshes from P.Britt was/is my only option and from what I've seen thus far (in my fairly extensive browsing of the mod, yay open source!) player character armor meshes are designed for regular humans.

The little shoes (maid's sandals, so cute)that Catmansion girl wears are very unique. CM girl has several unique "footwear" armor options.

Catgirl definitely did NOT like my shoes, as you noticed she drops them and stuff. Catboy must partly be based on the farmboy mesh, as he could equip the shoes, and show the texture, albeit in a half assed partly "inviso" foot way. I suspect he shares some of the farmboy animations also, but that is just based on my own (anecdotal) observations, I can't say for sure because I can't view the animations. I just noticed that regular farmboy, half giant and catboy all do that doofus looking idling where they scratch their stomachs and shift around, plus a few other motions.

I tried cloning the farmboy mesh for the dwarf, skeleton and half giant, and what do you know...the half giant wears the shoes properly so you were correct that his mesh is pretty much the same as farmboy's.

Pretty in Pink!

With the cloned mesh, Dwarf and Skelly did the same as Catgirl and dropped the shoes and then there was that whole glitch-y thing with the item being equipped and in the inventory at the same time, plus the inventory freezes up. So, no cloned meshes for them, those brats. Tongue

Regarding alpha channels, hmm. I didn't add any to my custom boots, but as you've noticed the shoe uses the same armor texture as the boot, so perhaps some of the stock DS boots have an alpha channel. I did use a couple of those, and just dumped the textures into the mod, which technically I guess I didn't have to do. Only needed my custom textures, because I simply must have purple, pink and black shoes... Wink I think I will get more textures into the mod in the coming days.

ANYWAY. I've taken enough of your (or any other reader's) time. It is 1:30 on Monday morning and I should go to bed, I guess. It is going to snow tomorrow or, erm, later on today so that's gonna suck. Thanks for reading and good night.

Oh yeah, this little guy likes his shoes (well boots I guess) striped. I should change that error image to red and white or red and green for a more Christmas-ey look. Insane

Hi Kathy,
I just can not help myself when a new mod appears, I have to test it. It was fun playing around with the shoes. I will save the mod for when I play with a party of standard farm girls. At present I am in a Cat Mansion Mood, since most of my armor and weapons are designed for them. I will have to look into making the cute cat mansion shoes work with the standard farm girl at some point. I will let you know what happens.
