httpS and Google Ban

It's nice to state the secure HTTP, from a modder's point of view however I actually would prefer to see that someone finally cares about the Google ban. Sad

Make a test yourself - with Google you most probably won't find any search results (directly) refering to SiegeTheDay.org - a situation I think that doesn't really reflect all the efforts gamers an d users here put in maps, mods, feedbacks about them or in the accumulation of contemporary knowledge that will keep DS1 and DS2 alive.

But assumed once HTTPS and Google ban are linked anyhow, then of course I'm looking forward to see this process go on!

I didn't know there was one. Is this on technical grounds (site with "insecure" server)?

The only element that makes the homepage "mixed content" is the Siegetheday.org logo, which is a .jpg rather than text probably to prevent font substitution, and that can be cured by using a relative url, or changing it to use https.

Given that it's all part of the Drupal CRM software, that change will probably "cure" the entire site. Links leading outside aren't an issue, it's included content like images and advertising. We don't have any of the latter to worry about, of course.

I don't know anything about Google Ban either, just that browsers are getting more obnoxious with self signed certificates.
I finally got LetsEncrypt certs created for all my hosted sites so I'm working on switching them all to SSL. Wooh.

As to the mixed content..I'll have to check the config and look for that logo.

Did you already check the robots.txt ??

Please do a test yourself, use Google to find (any) post on SiegeTheDay.org about you (your nickname), any mods subjects, etc...

Me at least, I always get zero results with Google.

- "Legendary Mod"
- "Techiem2"
- "httpS and Google Ban"
- . . .
Using Google, no search results points on SiegeTheDay.org - while Bing usually does within the top ten (specially if you add "forum" too).

Have you any explanation for this?
Or do you think this is just a coincidence?

@Techie: KillerGremal is quite correct doing any of the above searches using google you get no results related to Siegetheday.org However Yahoo, Bing, and even duckduckgo will find the links to the above on siege the day.

could the admin drop enforced https? i cannot access the site on any of my windows oses due to overpowerful encryption being used and newer browsers with better encryption no longer being supported on older windows oses. i can only access the site using a live session of ubuntu 14.04 lts with firefox 39. even then, the site constantly crashes the browser every now and then.

i do not understand for the need for over-aggressive encryption being required. i only encountered this kind of encryption issue when trying to visit pirate sites! please be reminded that this game is designed for legacy oses like windows 9x, 2000 and xp. there are ppl around who build retro rigs for the sake of getting the best "retro experience" around and not everyone needs the benefits of newer windows. not to mention it is a hassle having to switch to a newer windows with a newer supported browser just to post/update stuff on your mods online.

this decision to shove encryption down the user's throat is no different from m$ shoving win10 down the throat of everyone. this is a rather poor and short sighted decision. i also do not think this site requires or needs encryption as it is not a pirate site! i cannot tell u how i seriously reconsidered going back to modding ds again because of this poor short sighted decision to force https down the throat of visitors of the site which is a totally unnecessary white elephant.

i strongly advise the admin to consider proper universal functionality of the site rather than just updating the site for the sake of updating because it is "hip" or "fun" to do so. also do note that using encryption will increase the server's cpu load unnecessarily for what the site does as encryption is totally unneeded.

works just fine with firefox 45 and ie 11 on windows 7 just saying Tongue ... tiptoes back to swtor, b4 I get yelled at! by the way Femme, come play swtor on the Euro server red eclipse I could see u as a sith inquisitor type! 2 free characters level to 50 fun game

If you explicitly want to find any map related topics on SiegeTheDay.org and hence ask Google with 'map site:siegetheday.org' still nothing gets listed. :o

Take any recent/poplular topic from here, Google never lists anything from this site. Puzzled Sad

Only result I could get from google about siege the day.

Siegetheday.org still suffers some kind of Google ban... Sad

I'm wondering why... Puzzled

However it bothers me a bit that a big portion of web users and DS players won't find this this forum with all its ongoing information/discussion about DS1+DS2. Sad

What's also interesting is usually there are 3-20 guests normally but Sunday there where over 600 Shock :?

I checked our robots.txt file to see if we were locking Google out in any way.

https://www.siegetheday.org/robots.txt

It looks like the forums at least should be accessible.

Hi All,

I have registered SiegeTheDay with Google Webmaster tools in an attempt to identify why we don't seem to show up on Google. I will update this thread when I have something to share. Thanks.

Hi All,

We have fixed the issue that was preventing google from listing us. You should now be able to see SiegeTheDay by navigating here:

https://www.google.ca/?gws_rd=ssl#q=site:siegetheday.org

Over the next few days you should see more pages become indexed. Here we come world!

Thanks.

Thank you for fixing whatever was wrong. If you have some time some day could you explain it?

@brkopac: Thank you for your efforts, that's really great to read! Laughing out loud

EDIT:
I just noticed, the forum search is working again - ...a temporal coincidence!?
However, it's nice to see it working again. Smile

@bare_elf: SiegeTheDay.org is hosted on the same server as few other websites. Those websites require some pretty hefty restrictions on who and what can crawl the server. As such, the server was setup to block any, and all, website bots. It required us to change some firewall rules and open up SiegeTheDay to the bots. From there we registered with Google Webmaster Tools that allows us to control the indexing process.

@KillerGremal: Most of the sites functionality should be up and running again. If you see anything malfunction please either PM me or post again in this tread.

YAAAY, the password reset now works and I can be me again,
Thanks
