..in praise of Mageworld.

Mageworld represents a return to the old-fashioned notion of an adventure - it's a thrill to play and learn as you go - and a comfort to know that it's not going to be an easy journey!

forums:

I played a lot of siegelets in my time and Mageworld is one of them I couldn't really get into... Same as Hyperboria.
The Elemental & Copperhead Retailation though I played right through to the end (or the "To Be" end on Elemental)

Kinda like Ultima V but last time I played it I got to an enemy on the bridge that's just Unkillable and it kills you every time you go near it... then again I later found out i was going in the wrong direction, then i got to a camp of people that refused to talk to me no matter what I did so i gve up on the mod

Though overall it was Ace

Which just goes to show that different folks have different taste.
I didn't complete Copperhead, however, I played Mageworld all the way through and am on my third time through Hyperborea. Smile
It's not really a matter of right and wrong, or even good or bad. I thought Copperhead was an absolutely INCREDIBLE acomplishment. I stand in humble awe at the skill that went into that work. It's a GOOD game. BUT, it's gameplay style just didn't happen to be the kind that holds my attention. If it HAD been, it wouldn't have held yours.

You may have hit the nail on the head there, Kilarin. There aren’t many games that can hold one’s attention for so long or that make such demands of the player. You simply have to go slowly, there really is no point in rushing this game.

I’ve just realised that I’ve been playing my present Mageworld game for 41 hours! The odd thing is that, though I know that I still have so much to learn and so much to accomplish before the game is finished, I’m still looking forward to playing it!
It’s a very densely written and very carefully crafted game that really repays the player for the amount of time and patience required to play it properly.
Incidentally, you could say exactly the same thing about Lands of Hyperborea, I’m 38 hours into my present game there, and I’m still discovering more and more - that’s one massive game!

I’m not surprised that people don’t get it, though – you have to play LOH for about an hour before it starts to reveal it’s hidden depths, obviously that requires a certain amount of commitment.

It has to be said, Kilarin, your MageWorld Journal add-on makes playing the game a breeze – saves those hours wasted scribbling notes and drawing maps - thanks a ton for that one!

By the way, mine’s still a beta version - is the final release scheduled yet?

Absolutely. I think both Mageworld and LOH are incredible experiances.

Well thank you, you are very kind. I'm glad you are finding it useful!

Yes, version 1.0 is out, you can read about it and download it at:
http://www.enigmatic-dreams.org/MwJ/

The only significant change when you upgrade from 0.97beta to 1.0 will be the elimination of that annoying "This is a beta" screen at the begining. Smile

Yo, K - I'm gone already!! Dance

I've been playing DS since it first came out - also a lot of mods and siegelets - Xaa's modification is without doubt the most innovative - there is so much in Mageworld that is unique - it pushes the DSTK right to its limits.

Xaa's literary expertise shows through all over - the story line is kept paramount and the whole thing has been exquisitely crafted.

If you really want to see what is possible, then play this siegelet.. but expect a real challenge!!

Big up for the Mageworld crew!!

I hope you refer to the players, because Mageworld was made by one person. I don't think Jim counts as a crew. But he works like one.

Too bad he's gone to other engines.

I loved LoH, Copperhead, Elemental, but I just didn't like Mageworld. I beat it, but it wasn't very "player friendly". Don't get me wrong, I like challenges, but things like the riddle with the /mesay thing....that simply isn't userfriendly. I also found that it is "mostly" beatable with only a ranged/magic character. It should be just as beatable with melee.

RPG's are meant to be beaten through various paths and means - not just a singular path.

I think he made it really hard with melee characters because in the original and expansion, a melee person could breeze through the game without breaking a sweat. My dad played one(he's the fighter type, I'm a battlemage-type(all 4 types :D)), and it was so easy, I bet he coulda soloed the game.

...that's what I mean, it pushes back the boundaries!

It's complicated, OK, but this is where Kilarin's MwJournal comes in so handy!

By the way - Iarus has produced a new tool - the MwRecipeBook - v1.2 is being tested over at Xaa's site - it's well worth checking out!!

Yeah, it's a nice piece of work!

Slogging my way through DS2 at the moment..Gameplay is limited right now...The further I get into I seem to be losing interest... When I finish it I will be back to Mageworld..lol... Still haven't finished it yet looking foward to getting back to MW..p.s. I have to finish DS2 first I'm a bloody stubborn Taurus so don't ask "why I just don't play MW?"... Cool Laughing out loud

It's the attention to detail that makes Mageworld such fun to play - I mean, just look at Maklin showing off his pin-up on the wall (Pooka looks suitably non-plussed!!)

(left-click on image to enlarge)

Xaa says there are 50 Easter eggs hidden around the game as well - just to make life even more interesting...!!

Meanwhile, Pooka says, "... are you talkin' to me - are you talkin to me?!"

Sure sounds like good times! Great job man, I wish I could do exactly that right now...

the Arma Igneus is one mean brute of a weapon - good sound effects, too!

I did a save at the Red Witch's hidey-hole, so I can go back and test the other special equipment..

Ha, ha! This just gets better..

KerChunk BAM! KerChunk BAM!
Oh yes, VERY satisfying.

I almost never used the Arma, but boy it felt good when you did use it. Smile

Kilarin

Hey, K - did you use that throwing thingy?
I tried on the armor, but I've still got to test it, yet..

Remember to quote your Xena correctly. It's a "roundy throwing killing thing". Smile

No, actually I took the arma, I just didn't use it much. It made combats to easy for my particular taste. So I used it in a few places just for the fun of it, and occasionally when I was in a rush and just wanted to clear an area quickly. AND, once or twice when I did something stupid and ended up in a jam that I just didn't want to work out of the hard way Smile

But in general, I didn't take it out hardly at all. It IS possible for a player to comlete MW without using any of the ancient weapons. You have to take one for the quest to advance, but you don't have to use it.

When someday I get time to go through MW again, I intend to take one of the items and drop it back at the red queens feet. (A girls allowed to change her mind!) Smile That way the quest gets advanced and I don't feel in an ethical bind about whether or not to fulfil my bargain with the red queen. AND I won't feel tempted to bring out the mighty kerCHUNK when it's 2am and I find myself surrounded by 6 black knights... Wink
