Chatty Kathy's

How about a thread of general chatting? Maybe we can post things about ourselves to get to know each other better, or just post chatty stuff. So anyway, here are a few things about me:
My name is Kathleen.
I am in my late 30's.
I am 5 foot 2 inches.
I have dark brown curly hair that is to the middle of my back.
I like to read and write and play Dungeon Siege.
I like to post in forums.
My favorite pizza is mushroom

So...tell me about you? Smile

BTW, this is the "real" Chatty Cathy

Interesting choice of sites to make your point... American Herbal Products Association. :P

The fact of the matter is that herbal remedies may be just as effective, but they can also be just as dangerous when not used in the correct way. Think about mushrooms / toadstools... they look alot alike but one will kill you, and the other just tastes great on a pizza. I would never pick a mushroom looking thing and eat it because I don't know how to tell the difference... and I know practically nothing about herbs so I'm not going to be treating myself with green leafy thing A, green leafy thing B or green leafy thing C. Herbal medicine is more complicated than just pulling certain weeds out of your garden and making a tea... and packaged herbal products are mass marketed just like pharmaceuticals.

Well, I have several books on herbalism, and yes, herbal remedies can be dangerous, as many substances can be if not taken properly. It is always best (IMO) to consult with a doctor about a physical ailment before you decide to treat it yourself by any method. However, lots of common plants can be used to supplement one's diet and promote good health if one educates oneself thoroughly and use common sense.

On a related note (sort of) check out this vintage ad. Remember how we were saying how modern ads were dumb? Looks like things weren't much better back in the day. (1957, to be exact) This is truly dumb...

Look, she isn't even ironing anything, she is just floating around in space with an ironing board! Laughing out loud

Hehe, that is a funny ad. Smile

It is one heck of a long extension cord! Would solar panels work in space? Wink

I have to admit, I love retro type stuff. I have a ton of these old ads hanging around, waiting to be posted in my blog. :P

How do you think the International Space Station is powered? Hamsters running on treadmills? Laughing out loud

I thought they used polecats..?

Hmmm, come to think of it, there would be slight problems with trying to link up the ISS to a hydro-electric station or a wind farm....

Hamsters running on (up?) polecats would be too wierd.

No the astronauts are on the treadmills, I've seen the pictures.

They have to have a fan on them, because the sweat would just accumulate (it can't drip off) and they might drown in it!

The world is runned by hamsters in treadmills.

Err.. no. It's run by scandinavians.

a lot of things have a wikipedia page, clicking the random button can give you some strange results.
Here are some results i had when i did that some time ago:
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization
Fibonacci number
Aji Ichiban
Cornwall

Don't you guys remember the mice run everything, per The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and yes, there is a Wikipedia page for that as well....

Yay, wikipedia! Smile

Wikipedia has the strangest things. Hyperborea seemingly has connections to Nazi cultists....weird.

Some more old print ads illustrating that advertising has almost always been an "iffy" business...
Note: None of these companies are in business anymore, these ads are from the 1930's and 1940's. And no, smoking is not a good idea!!!

The thing that is a little disturbing about this ad is that the pig seems really really gung ho about diving and eating some canned pork. 8O

Bland and lard: 2 words I don't care to see associated with food. Plus the whole legs coming out of a can and dancing thing. A wee bit odd, eh?

Smoke cigarettes if you support labor unions! Lung cancer and, and ..freedom!! Not to mention clowns surely inspire one to smoke, er, right? Unless you are like me and think clowns are the creepiest.

hehe, they sure reasoned differently back then. Smile
