Fairy & Pixie Bug

piperb's picture

Just installed DSLOA again and had forgotten about the graphics corrupting bug until they zapped my char with "a gift of mana". Siegenetwork use to have a fix posted on the forums there, but the link is now dead. Does anyone by chance have this fix on hand that they would be willing to post? Thanks in advance.

Piperb if no one here has the fix you might look at Dungeon Siege - Legends of Heroes as they have most of the mods from Siegenetwork. There is a link to the site on the left side of the main page in the DS Communities section. Just wondering do you have all the DS1 patch files installed?

Have already checked Legend of Heroes and no luck. Very few DS sites are still active but browsed every one a google search turned up. Those that did show in the search have a lot of dead links. Got most of the mods I do use from the links that are still working at Siegenetworks and Legend of Heroes. This is one of the few remaining DS sites that had current posts, that's what led me to ask about the fix here. As for the patches, I have the 3 disc LOA version that has the original DS included. According to the official site, I was not supposed to install the DS1 patch. Must admit I tried anyway after that bug showed up again and the patch wouldn't install, not needed on my version or some such.

Hi Piperb,
I did an Internet Search using the search term "Dungeon Siege Legends of Aranna Fairy Fix" and was sent to legends of heroes old site and I was able to locate the patch. There is no readme and the text on the site was in Czechoslovakian -- but I would guess it is the file you are looking for as it originally came from Siegenetwork. Reading Lisa's notes (witness who ran Siegenetwork) she did not think it was actually required for the latest version of LoA but here you go anyway a link to my storage area,

http://siegetheday.org/~bare_elf/files/fairyfix.zip

Note if it does not work when placed in the DS1 resources folder, move it to the DSLOA folder and try again.

I did see the file that is on Legend of Heroes but the description for it was not in English so I didn't consider the file an option. Would not want to make matters worse by introducing another language into my game. Are you sure the file itself is not in Czechoslovakian? If it is in English...time to do a happy dance!!!

hmmm may i ask what exactly is this fairy bug? i used to have fairy bugs before that kept crashing my game with exception detected but that was due to unstable hardware i had.

@ Lady Femme
I to always thought it was a hardware issue, but it appears it may not be.
The change in the code was in the inventory and mind of the fairy and pixie.
Not exactly sure what the changes do. Characters are not really my area.

@ Piperb
There where about 10 lines of code that where changed, not to worry the changes are in English. Over the years I have used mods in every language the game was released in. In every Case the code that the game engine understands is in English. The things like how the people talk and what the quests say you might not understand but that does not stop the mods from working. In any case I looked at the file in DS1 and the patch and other than a few lines of code being altered and some deleted all appears to be useable.

@bare_elf
That is great news to me!! Thank you for your time and effort. I do appreciate it very much!

@Lady Femme
I have had them crash my games, lock up the game AND my computer and cause exception errors as well. But most of the time when the fairy/pixie gives your char the gift of life or mana it corrupts the graphics in-game. Whatever area your char. is in at the time will stop being drawn which leaves a large line of black across the screen, (in my games), preventing you from progressing any further. Or the area will have huge blocks missing. Either way large areas of the map go missing and will either turn green or black. In previous games I tried leaving the area, coming back later and reloading, neither will fix the issue after this happens. Any area that goes away like this will not return during that game. If the fairy/pixie chases your char and repeatedly gives you the "gifts", it will lock up or crash my game. I read on other older forums that the fairy/pixie do the repeated giving when your char is at max points. Reloading a previous save before the fairy/pixie gift is the only way I have found to save the particular game your on. The down side to this is that there are a few areas where your char can not seem to avoid the little buggers and to advance the game your char. has to go thru that area of the map...Highly annoying.

As I noted before, I purchased LOA with the original DS included. This bug has been present since the first time I played this game. On numerous occasions I have been forced to start a new game due to the fairy/pixie bug making a map disappear and there would be no way to continue the present game. And I have had this show up on XP-SP2 and XP-SP3. So the bug does exist in retail versions of LOA.

Thanks again, your assistance is very much appreciated.

oh yea. i think i had several fairies/pixies get stuck giving me health/mana in an infinite loop and it crashed the game with exception detected after 1 second of getting stuck in the infinite loop.

i've since become a bloodthristy femme fatale for killing fairies/pixies after that. i use the mage aoe spells to kill fairies/pixies whenever i see them so they dont crash the game.

tho after i got rid of that bad mobo and got a better one, i no longer experience any stuck fairies or pixies.

piperb, did u uninstall ur vanilla ds1 v1.11 first and then install dsloa? i had both the vanilla ds1 v1.0 and dsloa and i uninstalled my old ds first before installing the new dsloa.

and lastly, thanks to Elf elfy Elf for finding the fix. i'll be sure to check it out when i find the time to mod ds again lol~

i always found the gifts of health and mana useless as they're too little. it gets worse on vet & elite as they practically restore less than 0.1% of ur total health/mana and dont wanna risk crashing the game for sumthing insignificant as this. time for a fairy/pixie removal fix! kekekeke~ :mrgreen:

Yep, your PC has been "gifted".

Yeah, any area effective explosive spell works...IF your char has them. The little buggers got me this time before my char. even made it to the crypts. (ie: no spell levels yet.)

Yes, a big thank you!! That fix is already in the game folder and ready for me to play again! Smile

That's not an option with my version. I have the 3 disc all-in-one set, (so to speak). It installs DS & DSLOA and if I uninstall anything, I uninstall everything. Unfortunately, uninstall and reinstall has little to no effect on this bug...tried that several times after getting the game and before I discovered the fix on Siegenetworks old forums. Reloading a save prior to the "gifts" effects is the only thing I found to get around it after they have zapped your char., (without that fairy & pixie fix, that is.)
