Return of the curse of son of spam-bot

Looks like at least one got past the defenses again.

I notice there's a common format to the names the bots use. A name followed by a number. So maybe the solution here is to delete all users with that form of name. How about it, Sol77?

How about trusting the users?

My suggestion:

Provide a "report post" link we can click as we identify spam.
You get a report, investigate the post, and decide if to ban/delete the thing.

A few have gotten past the defences for a few hours (new member accounts with a spam post...), and I delete them when I see them (seems to me that Solly mentioned he nabbed one too). The volumes are low so I don't see that as a major problem. Making it hard for a new legit member to post just to stop the occasional spam post seems like overkill to me.

Guest posts need to be approved, and all of those are reviewed before they are seen. Those are the worst offenders... and the cost of legit guest posts needing to wait before they are published is a reasonable one.

Edit:
And these spam accounts are blocked, but I doubt they are revisited after the initial posting. A report function would help in high volume situations, but I read everything posted here anyways... it's not necessary to point to something I'm going to see when I log in.

I also don't want it to be more difficult to sign up or post a comment. There is a captcha that needs to be answered when registering a new account though. If things get worse I can make it a bit more difficult to read.

About deleting users. I think it is best to delete or block when users offend so no one gets removed by accident. At least for now.

Oh and thanks Sharkull for doing such a stellar job.

11 spam comments (by guests) deleted without ever been seen by anyone else... all it took was two clicks. Smile

Don't go in the water... Shark eats all spam. ^^

:cop:
I've been finding more of the spam comments in the approval queue over the last few days... 1-2 dozen per day. None ever get published though, and all it takes is a couple clicks to delete them all.

Idea: Replace the current security model with one that challenges the user with a ridiculous challenge, like solving partial derivatives. Stare

Nine more bites the dust!

Hmmm.. derivatives.. yes. And they have to solve them using skrit!

...and Solly, you have to be careful. There have been a few legit guest posts mixed in with the spam (I just deleted four and published one...).
Smile

Yes I noticed.

Maybe we could do a simple math problem then? Smile

edit: Definitely need something for comments too. Removed 13 posts or something like that and approved one.

No guest comment gets published before review, so it's not urgent Solly.
Smile

(And the one you approved was spam... generic comment that seemed on topic, but the guest's "name" was a link to a harry potter video download :? ).

oops. Smile

Got sick of all the spam blog posts so I upped the difficulty of the captchas. Hope this doesn't cause any problems for any legit posters.

I just deleted over 500 spam comments by a new registered user (now blocked).

:?

Wish we could block them at the core (ip address). Stare

Also had to remove more than 500 comments... Thanks for helping out Sharkull!

I've started banning the IP-adresses, and I've made the captcha more difficult again...

Testing something.

I approve of Sol77 testing something... (and hope publishing this doesn't screw up the test).

Well if it prevents some of the spam blogs and prevents some legit users signing up so be it. I was able to figure out the captchas. Although I have been getting quite good at finding the ham by products Smile them not being here would not offend me.
