Can the secret level be visited more than once?

If I go during my Mercenary run, then enter Veteran with that same character, can I get into the secret level?

It's been a while, but as far as I remember, you can get into the secret level once per difficulty.

I think you can even use the items collected during Mercenary to visit it on Veteran (which assumes you didn't use them up at the earlier level) - I believe I did it that way before now.
