Avatar Pics (or: Wasting Saturday Evening)

I have thought it would be time to upload an avatar/nickname image.
In such cases i try to respect web speed and bandwidth, however:

my ping image: 8 bit, 5 kb (saved with ImageMagick)
==> when uploaded 16bit, 16kb

my gif image: 4 bit, 2 kb (saved with IrfanView)
==> when uploaded 8 bit, 5kb, transparency lost

Why these images will changed?
...totally stupid and wasting all my efforts to provide an web optimized image. Sad

However, below the wanted one, please compare the sizes with the one on the left side.

I have no idea why that is happening.. maybe it is the php GD library that is being used for some reason. :shrug:

I can understand why images are generally manipulated since most people won't take the time to optimize their pictures, but there should be some check to see if the new image is actually smaller in size. Not sure where the check should lie, but I'm leaning towards the php library that is being used for the optimization.

Btw, that is a nice avatar. Smile
