I used to be so poor, I couldn't even pay attention! Okay, I heard the groans and that was a very bad pun. When I was a newly wed, my (now) ex-husband and I were very poor. It is simply an economic state and not a reflection of character. People are nice or unkind due to what is in their hearts, not their wallets. But then you guys knew that, right?
