Interesting. I was also in the so called "slow classes" because I basically couldn't see anything properly and I had a lot of trouble with spatial reasoning, even something as basic as putting the correct shape into it's corresponding box. Then, lo and behold they tested me to see how "dumb" I really was (this was the school admin, btw. I was doing independent projects in all my classes because the work was too easy, esp. the reading classes. My teachers who bothered to take the time to get to know the girl who cowered in the back and said nothing realized that I was an intelligent kid. anyway, I digress...) So, yea, they tested me and when I scored in the 98 percentile it kinda knocked them for a loop. Heh, they whisked me away and gave me a promotion. lol, dopes. Of course, this was back in the mid to late 70's. But from what you write, Wyvante, it doesn't seem schools have fully addressed the needs of the kids who are bright, but have a different learning style from the "norm" whatever the heck that really means. Normal or average is just another label.

This is actually what IQ tests were designed for by psychologist I disagree with. They are to test how dumb somone is and place them in some dumb classes. I find them to be flawed. I don't think you can accurately measure somone's intelligence in one test with academic subjects as the focal point. I think a lot of people labeled dumb can develop their mind in an alternative way to achieve average to high intellect that can function. In your case your side projects in school. I bet you learned a lot more doing those. I don't learn as much from school compared to my self-teaching even with my 3.8ish gpa. Schools should be promoting self-teaching. They should teach/guide you to teach yourself imo. Just like the Jeet Kune Do Philosophy. My current school atempts this concept, and I have learned a lot more than any other school. I also think the grading system is out of wack, but that is another long thought.

A younger cousin of mine is going down the same path I did, except he did not say the heck with school like I did. I tought him how to mod diablo 1 at a very very young age(he was 7-8). I had a lot of influence over him(I was his role model) and he continued to mod games. The kid is not dumb at all. I moved and now my grandfather is surely his role model. He was my role model(I have no father) and is a brilliant philosophical sage Smile . I think many smart people fall through the large cracks in the school systems.

I did not get glasses until the second grade(I can barely see without them). When I got my glasses, I was shocked with the detail of the world. Just seeing the detail of a leaf excited me. I was held back because my cursive was bad. I had trouble reading and sucked at math, so they put me in the dumby classes which bored me. I thought I was stupid(I was told so by my teachers) so played stupid. Teachers thought I had attention deficit disorder, because I would talk to other students and not do any work. I found out I'm borderline A.D.D though. I embrace my "disorder". It is a blessing in my perception. I use caffeine to stimulate my brain activity further.

Some geniuses like my cousin Brian(I love this guy with the doofy hair)cannot function in society. Ironically they cannot use their great intellectual power to achieve in life. Knowing this, I like to measure people by their work/achivements rather than said intellect. That's really important to me.

GGO/KMD once wrote in my blog that I was a smart dummy and I have to agree with that

Laughing out loud I am so smart I forgot to log in and post my pithy remarks properly...

To me it's not about being smart/stupid. It's about using the tools your mind has to achieve desired goals. Everyone is stupid at something and that is what makes us human imo. Admitting you're stupid at some things shows me humility which is a powerful recognition. Saying you are just plain stupid shows me you lack confidence. Saying you are just plain smart shows me you're egotistical and ignorant.

Edit: Btw sharkull impressive achievements Smile .
