Anniversary!

Has anyone noticed that ever since "Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary", the production of HD-Remakes and/or Ten-year Anniversary's has skyrocketed? I haven't done any actual research on the subject, as usual, and am basing this solely off of observation but ever since Halo CE's HD remake came out and did so bloody well, it seems everyone is trying to dip their hand into the replay bowl. I mean, it's kind of genius in terms of exploitation. You're selling the same game, with prettier pictures and BOOM! Of course, they usually seem to throw in extra content as well. Personally, I'm pleased with this.. You may remember my rant on DSIII and how I referenced Fable shooting down the tubes, but this Anniversary looks promising and I've already pre-ordered.
I've seen...
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - Got it!
Age of Empires II: HD Edition - Got it!
Fable Anniversary - Can't wait!
Kingdom hearts HD Remix
Rumors of a Halo 2 Anniversary?
and a lot more I can't quite remember off the tip of my tongue, but, you get it!

So, what do you think? Is this a good thing to bring back old games with new colors? Or is it just a marketing technique to squeeze us of an extra sixty bucks? Is buying one of these remakes a rip off or a good time?

forums:

It would be cool if there was a HD Remake for Dungeon Siege 1 and / or 2. I could imagine better textures, high-res models, new sprites and effects and even a few new quests with special items on the side.

Sadly Gas Powered Games will be sold to this World Of Tanks company and I don't know what's on their list. Maybe Wildman..

I think it's a bit of both. Bringing older games to an audience that may have missed them years ago is great, not to mention the fun nostalgia factor for other fans.

I don't think the idea is necessarily a "rip-off" but it seems to make sense from a money making standpoint. A company can have the goal to please customers (since happy customers buy stuff) and also make money. Nothing wrong with that, I think, although 30 plus dollars is too much for my wallet.

Ha, side note. I nearly wrote "gold" in the place of "money". Too much gaming on the brain, apparently.

I would love the entire ds series in hd that would be so sweet. Also they could have a promo for all the users that could produce intials keys maybe a good discount

-Jumps up and down- SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I have the Fable Anniversary! It's..
It's... AWESOME!
I mean, it's really more or less the same game with prettier pictures and a few tweaks, but STILL!

Yes and look at what third party modders have been able to do with Doon, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Stalker, etc.

I've just downloaded a mod package for Doom which converts all the textures in 2048 x 2048 HD! Really makes a difference.

Problem is at the moment DS2 is mostly limited to 256 x 256 and will crash if you try a higher resolution texture size. So you're limited in running the game with shortcuts to get higher resolutions than 1280 x 1024. It makes the game look a lot better but obviously it would look even better if the textures were higher resolutions when drawn to the screen by the engine and then upscaled by the resolution of your monitor.

Maybe if GPG were able to survive on their own they may have eventually released the source for the Siege Engine but now that Square-Enix owns the rights to the series there's absolutely no hope of that ever happening. So either there's a genius coder like Lucius with the XLEngine and Elder Scrolls Daggerfall, who can reverse engineer the game to create a new engine to render everything (probably even less likely than Square-Enix ever releasing the source considering that DS2 is a lot more advanced game than Daggerfall was) or some equally clever coder can design some hooks into the engine through dlls or the like which would allow it to display HD textures like been done with Final Fantasy VII.

I really, really would love to see a HD version of Dungeon Siege I and 2 and the expansion packs and would gladly pay full retail price for it but sadly I can't ever see it happening.
